Editorial Intern at FiT Publishing
I began working as an editorial intern at FiT Publishing the summer after my sophomore year. I was incredibly grateful to have an opportunity that allowed me to directly apply my editing skills in a professional setting. During my time at FiT, I have gained and perfected many of my skills as an editor and writer. I have become proficient in both APA and Chicago styles through this internship, as well as learned how to proofread and copyedit text with other editors. I have also become more fluent in Microsoft Office Suite through these project collaborations.
I have learned about the production process from start to finish, as I have worked on manuscripts during every step of the process. I was lucky enough to begin this internship before COVID-19, which allowed me to experience the atmosphere of a professional work environment. I have learned how to conduct myself in meetings and ask for help from other editors.
This internship has also challenged me in ways that I did not anticipate. I have learned how to create indexes, format pages, proofread and copyedit both journals and textbooks, meet deadlines, check image copyrights, contact authors, etc. I am grateful that my employers trusted me with work that is typically not considered intern work, as this is why I learned so much. Pictured below are just a few of the textbooks and journals and workbooks that I have worked on.
I now know how to carry my skills into the real world, and I have also learned how to trust my instincts as an editor. The portfolio that I have compiled during my time at FiT will be available soon.
